History
Although Scottish and Irish settlers arrived in the Charlotte area in the 1740s, it was forged under the strong influence of German colonists who arrived at about the same time. The city was named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of England’s King George III, and the county after her birthplace in Germany. The “Queen City” flourished when gold was first discovered there in 1799.
Between the 1880s and the Great Depression, the small towns surrounding Charlotte became significant throughout the Carolina Piedmont region. Like Charlotte, Mint Hill blossomed with New South industrialism and the advent of the railroad. Today, many of the historical buildings in Mint Hill have been relocated and refurbished. The restored home of country doctors Whitley and DeArmon serves as a reminder of the time when the post office, the hardware store, the Ira V. Ferguson Country Store, Bain School and the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church were the center of activity and the lifeblood of Mint Hill. It commemorates a time when the country doctor was paid in chickens or produce from the family farm.
Culture
Uptown Charlotte is a mere 25 minutes from the historic center of Mint Hill. History lovers will enjoy a walking tour of the Charlotte Museum of History or the Historic Fourth Ward with its cemeteries and vintage 17th century homes. The Mint Museum of Craft & Design and the Tryon Center for Visual Arts are must-sees for art enthusiasts. Of course, there are numerous professional sports stadiums, Broadway plays at the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, and plenty of eclectic shopping and fine dining.
